Publication Day for The World in a Second
If it’s Tuesday, that means it’s Publication Day for most U.S.-published books. (In the UK, by the way, that magic day is Thursday, and for some reason unknown to me, Rogue came out on a Thursday as well.) April 14 is the official “pub date” for The World in a Second, the first picture book I translated from Portuguese to English. The book, written by Isabel Minhós Martins and illustrated by Bernardo P. Carvalho, has already received major critical acclaim, and I’ve heard that more great reviews are in the works.
I’m now looking at some new books to translate, both picture books and books for middle grade and teen readers. Some of these are from Portugal, and others from Brazil. When I’m in Portugal next month, I’m planning to spend a lot of time in bookstores looking for great stories to bring back. Now, though, I’m working on some sample translations and reader reports to send out before I leave.
I’m also working on my own historical novel set in Portugal. My blog posts from last year’s trip inspired much of the story, and I’ll be spending some of my time next month doing research and interviewing people. I don’t have specific blogging commitments, as I did last year when I wrote about the country’s growing tourist industry, Holy Week, and the 40th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution.
Anyway, on this special day for The World in a Second, I’d like to thank Claudia Zoe Bedrick from Enchanted Lion Books for giving me the opportunity to work on this amazing book, Isabel Minhós Martins and Bernardo Carvalho for creating O Mundo Num Segundo (the title of the book in Portuguese), and the PEN American Center for inviting Claudia to that January 2014 meeting to speak about her publishing of translated children’s books and bringing us two together.
Wonderful, Lyn! The book looks fabulous!!!
Thank you, Linda! The minute I saw that book, I wanted to translate it. And there’s a page that’s set in Chicago!
