Farmer’s Market
The leafy square near my apartment, Príncipe Real, is the site of the Saturday organic farmer’s market in Lisbon. On Saturday, Richard and I met one of the other Fulbright scholars, Rachel Burk, and her two young daughters, who happen to live a few blocks from us. In another coincidence, Rachel teaches at Tulane University, where our daughter, Madeleine, is an undergraduate. Here’s Rachel, with daughters Ada and Veronica:
The market covers three sides of the square. One side consists of fruits, vegetables, oil, and soaps.
Another side features handcrafts.
The third side has secondhand items, antiques, and historic elements salvaged from buildings. This is a small sample; on Tuesdays and Saturdays there’s a much larger flea market in the historic Alfama district.
The square has one of the city’s iconic trees, with spreading branches that shade the pathway and benches. On Monday a film company used this space to make an ad.
There are three cafes in the square, each with its specialty. This one has a variety of coffee and fruit drinks, as well as wine and other adult beverages. It has a nice selection of pastries, though these tend to sell out early.
Needless to say, the pigeons are quite well fed.
